Job Summary:

Nat Geo Content is the beating heart of National Geographic, with a mission to tell gripping factual stories that entertain and inspire a deeper connection to our world. This team is responsible for Nat Geo’s unparalleled storytelling across television, streaming, digital, social, and our iconic magazine. We are responsible for engaging our audience and consumers with fantastic storytelling and pulling them into a recurring revenue relationship with Nat Geo.

The Nat Geo Media team covers everything on the consumer journey, from creating television, print, digital, social, and audio content, generating awareness through PR/Comms, social and newsletters, acquisition, and retention marketing, print operations, international licensing, and digital platforms.

As Senior SEO & Digital Strategist for Nat Geo Media, you will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive digital SEO strategy across our editorial, marketing, and technology partners. The role demands a proactive approach, excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to build relationships across the editorial, marketing, and technology teams.

The Senior SEO & Digital Strategist will play a crucial part in setting & reaching strategic benchmarks, optimizing content production workflows and leveraging SEO expertise to identify and articulate areas of improvement to boost discoverability and ultimately drive increased traffic to the site and establish a strong SEO community of practice.

Responsibilities

Strategy & Direction

  • Develop & execute a global SEO strategy that aligns with business objectives and boosts the website's visibility and user engagement.

  • Champion SEO best practices by educating and training internal teams across editorial and marketing functions,and developing a governance framework to ensure adherence to best practices.

  • Collaborate with technology teams to ensure SEO is woven into website architecture and user experience (UX).

  • Turn data into accessible insights for content and marketing partners, outlining clear, actionable steps to increase traffic and search performance.

  • Partner with stakeholders to develop and implement best practices for SEO workflows and governance.

  • Develop and execute digital strategies to optimize content production workflows and publishing priorities across various channels and platforms.

  • Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to continuously improve digital strategies and keep National Geographic at the forefront of storytelling among its competitors.

Search Engine Optimization Practice

  • Conduct in-depth keyword research, optimize metadata, analyze competitors, and perform technical & on-page audits to identify areas for improvement.

  • Coordinate with editorial counterparts and provide feedback and suggestions for new content opportunities that match editorial content production pipelines and targets.

  • Analyze website traffic, internal linking structures, and site speed to optimize performance and mobile responsiveness.

  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to innovate and optimize digital products, features, and UX for business growth and audience satisfaction.

  • Monitor top trafficked content from off platform and recommend recirculation opportunities to content creators.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of proven experience in SEO optimization and audience acquisition in a news or digital publishing environment. Subscriber acquisition experience a plus.

  • Track record of collaborating with a large and varied group of cross-functional teams and partners to tackle ambiguous problems and make forward progress.

  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize work.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated analysis and presentation skills.

  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

  • A proactive approach to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability.

  • Proficiency in common analytics and SEO tools, such as SEMRush, AHRefs, Google Search Console, Lumar, Adobe Analytics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with and/or passion for integrating AI tools within workflows as well as understanding and anticipating what generative AI will bring to SEO.


The hiring range for this position in Washington, D.C. is $123,000 to $150,200 per year and New York is $126,000 - $157,400 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
