
Meteorologist - Off-Air Freelance (ABC News) (Expression of Interest)
Job Summary:
Did you grow up dreaming about weather forecasting, wondering about what causes lake-effect snow, hurricanes and tornadoes? ABC News is looking for an extremely motivated Meteorologist to join our best in the business weather team. This is an off-air role where the Meteorologist works behind the scenes with our on-air talent and editorial teams to communicate the day’s weather stories.

Responsibilities include:
- Creating a division-wide weather note focusing on nationally important weather stories
- Finding, creating, and organizing all ‘weather of the day’ facts, figures, stats
- Brief Anchor talent, Executive and Senior Producers on national weather editorial
- Develop weather hits for on-air meteorologists
- Create all weather graphics for on-air usage and playback using The Weather Company “Max” system
- Assist producers and writers with correspondent’s weather pieces, headlines and other content.
- Verify weather related social posts.
- Work with News Desk to coordinate correspondent placement for breaking weather coverage.
- Source and clear latest and greatest weather video
- Research and pitch weather related climate stories in conjunction with ABC News climate unit.
- Research and pitch weather stories for ABC News.com
Applicants must be enthusiastic multi-taskers who are passionate about weather and being a part of a hard-working team. They must be able to handle pressure under extreme deadlines and be flexible in dealing with breaking news. The successful candidate is able to clearly and succinctly communicate complex concepts with a wide range of people.
The Meteorologist must be willing to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, holidays as part of a 24/7 News team.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 plus years of experience in Broadcast Meteorology
- Strong Proficiency in The Weather Company “Max” Broadcast Weather Graphics platforms
- Familiarity with National Weather Service Products, Websites and Chat
Preferred Qualification:
- Basic knowledge of clipping and editing in Adobe Premiere Pro
Required Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science
- Must have completed Synoptic 2 Coursework
The pay rate for this role in New York is $400 per day. The base pay actually offered may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors.
